California DMV Address Change

Updating Your Address with the CA DMV

Relocating within California requires you to update your address with the DMV to ensure you receive important vehicle-related correspondence. The process is straightforward and can be completed without visiting a DMV office.

When to Update Your Address

California law requires you to notify the DMV of your address change within 10 days of moving. This update helps you receive renewal notices and other critical information regarding your vehicle and driving privileges.

  • Keep your registration, driver's license, and voter registration current.
  • Avoid missed notices for registration renewals or traffic violations.
  • Maintain accurate records for toll payments or vehicle citations.

How to Change Your Address

To update your address, you can fill out a Change of Address form, which can be found online or at any local post office. Submit this form electronically, by mail, or in person at any DMV office. Here's what you'll need to provide:

  • Your old and new addresses, including zip codes.
  • Your driver's license or identification card number.
  • The license plate numbers of all vehicles registered in your name.

Once your address change is processed, your vehicle registration record will be updated immediately, while your driver's record will reflect the change within 72 hours. It is not necessary to obtain a new driver's license or ID card unless you wish to have your new address printed on your physical card. If so, you may apply for a duplicate license with the new address.
